The Business Model Is the Problem
Content moderation, transparency initiatives, and chronological feed options are all welcome improvements. But they address symptoms, not the cause.
The cause is the business model. Social media companies generate revenue from advertising. Advertising revenue scales with time-on-platform. Time-on-platform scales with emotional engagement. Emotional engagement scales with outrage, fear, and divisiveness.
